One To Watch - Seymour

Mark Smith - Sunday September 15

The debut winner of an 1100m maiden on the Pakenham Synthetic on August 30, Sugar Coat opposed three lightly raced winners over 1200m at Seymour on Sunday, and his win was even more emphatic.

Ridden by Linda Meech for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, the 3-year-old son of Exceedance was kept three wide in the early stages before finding cover behind Escarpa. Angled out on the turn, Sugar Coat quickly collared the leading pair and was untroubled to defeat the Blue Point (IRE) gelding Salsa Fellow by two and three-quarter lengths with the Cliff’s Edge filly Escarpa back in third.

“It was a like a trackwork gallop for him in a small but quality field,” Linda Meech said.

“He still has a bit of learning to do. He is a rig, but that is not worrying him at the moment. He still does a few little things wrong. Racing will help that, and winning will help that.”

Bred and part-owned by Neil Werrett, Sugar Coat was a $100,000 Magic Millions purchase for Dalziel Bloodstock/Moody Racing from the Kitchwin Hills draft.

The son of Exceedance is the fourth winner from as many to race for the Randwick-winning More Than Ready (USA) mare Sugar Rush.

A $600,000 yearling, Sugar Rush is a daughter of Group III MRC HDF McNeil Stakes and Listed  Debutant Stakes winner Sugar Babe.

Sugar Rush has a yearling colt by Ole Kirk and was covered by him last spring.
