Breeding for Fun Leads to Rising Star Sprinter

Tara Madgwick - Sunday August 11

Breeding horses is not that complicated – you take a son of the champion sire and a daughter of the champion broodmare sire and voila!

I Am Invincible stallion Kobayashi is best known for his stream of quick juveniles in Queensland, but he has a promising sprinter on the rise in NSW with the Angela Davies trained gelding Our Kobison returning from a spell to win impressively at Randwick on Saturday to the delight of his big team of owners.

The lightly raced five year-old gelding won back to back races at Rosehill during the summer and was returning from a break in the Benchmark 88 event over 1000m.

Sent out a hot favourite with James McDonald in the saddle, Our Kobison warmed to his task over the final furlong surging clear to win by a length in a slick 57.64 seconds taking his overall record to six wins and three placings from 10 starts with prizemoney topping $365,000.

“He bounded at the start and lost a little bit of ground and to James credit he just sat quiet and gave him every opportunity to get home,” said Angela Davies.

“I think he’s back and I think he can improve a ton off that.”

Connections will look for another race in two or three weeks time for Our Kobison and see where things lead after that.

“He travelled fresh and strong in the run, but he’s a damn good horse with a great turn of foot,” said James McDonald.

Our Kobison was bred by part-owner Jodie Fessopoulos, who was also in the ownership of Kobayashi when he was racing and as a result ended up with a breeding right to the stallion when he retired to stud at Aquis in Queensland.

She combined forces with Tony Gorring at Hazelwood Stud in Queensland to find a suitable mare to take up that breeding right and he offered her the choice of two mares with Jodie settling on Orne River and Our Kobison is the result.

Our Kobison is the best of three winners from winning Fastnet Rock mare Orne River, a daughter of stakes-winner Victory Grove. He also has a four year-old full brother called I Am Sugoi that has won two of four starts and was transferred to Angela Davies earlier this year.

Not surprisingly Orne River headed to Aquis again last spring to visit Kobayashi, who has had a fee increase this year to $15,000 and covered 104 mares last spring.
