Colmar Romps in G3 SA Sires Produce - First SW Strasbourg

Mark Smith - Saturday July 20

Making his ninth start of the season, the tough-as-teak Colmar dominated from start to finish in Saturday's Group III Sportsbet South Australian Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville and honour Rosemont Stud's Strasbourg with his first stakes-winner.

Ridden by Samuel Payne for Samuel Payne for Ron Daniel and Trish Stanbury, Colmar bowled along in front and, by the time he made the home turn, had the field off the bit chasing. In a great result for the locals, Colmar strolled home five and three-quarter lengths to the good of Sir Prancealot (IRE) colt Snoopy Now, with the Written Tycoon filly Supercilious back in third.

Coming off a second in the Listed Oaklands Plate, Colmar advances his record to three wins, three seconds, and a third from nine starts with earnings of $266,265.

“When he first won, I thought this might be the best 2-year-old I’ve had, and he is,” Ron Daniel said.

“He is a really good horse and has always flown under the radar.

“He is a very ordinary trackworker. You would not back him in a maiden at Mortlake. He is just one of those horses.

“We have had our knockers. We’ve kept on going, although we thought about going to the paddock two or three starts ago.

“The breed are just so tough. When they get home, they eat up and look for a double feed, so it’s hard to tip them out.”

“He will have a break now.”

Bred by Phelan-Tribel Partnership, Colmar was withdrawn from the 2023 Premier Yearling Sale.

He is the best of three winners from four to race for the Warwick Farm winner Rapala. The daughter of Encosta De Lago traces back to US Group II winning mare Duty Dance (Nijinsky), who was runner-up in the Grade 1 Man O War Stakes.

The Group II BRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Strasbourg is also the sire the winner Stormbourg, who placed in the $1,000,000 Showdown at Caulfield, and Flying Straz who was third in the Listed SAJC Cinderella Stakes.

Strasbourg stands at Rosemont Stud. His fee has been listed as on application.
