Tara Madgwick - Monday July 15

The new season is nearly upon us and that means all over the country a new crop of rising two year-olds are taking baby steps in the best stables in the land with the Australian Turf Club announcing last week they had received 2094 entries for the 2025 Golden Slipper, so who is in the race?

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott saddled six runners in this year’s Golden Slipper and had first and third with Lady of Camelot and Storm Boy, so not surprisingly they lead the way as the biggest nominator with 159 nominations (76 fillies and 83 colts).

Among their entries are the half-brother by Flying Artie to Lady of Camelot and the half-brother by Pierro to Storm Boy that they purchased at Magic Millions for $375,000 and he has already been named Shangri La Boy. Another high profile named youngster in their entries is the Written Tycoon filly from Piping Hot and this full sister to Coolangatta has been named French Bikini.

Godolphin have 110 first nominations (54 fillies/56 colts) with the majority trained by James Cummings in Sydney and the bulk of them have been named so a scroll through their entries is super interesting.

Some of the names that jump out include Wiser (c Exceed and Excel), the first foal of Group I MRC Blue Diamond winner Lyre; Barbarossa (c Too Darn Hot (GB), half-brother to G2 winner Encryption from four time G1 winner Guelph; Cabriole (c Lonhro), first foal of Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Flit; Dubai Adventure (c Street Boss (USA), first foal of Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Exhilarates; Sphere (2f Bivouac), three-quarter sister to Group I VRC Newmarket Handicap winner Cylinder; and Texture (c Exceed and Excel), half-brother to Group I VRC Oaks winner Zardozi.

The nation’s two biggest and most successful trainers are next – Ciaron Maher (98 total/53 fillies/45 colts) and Chris Waller (91 total/39 fillies/52 colts).

The Maher stable entries include a couple that have been named and they include Blue Blood Prince (2c Snitzel), the full brother to Champion 3YO and now promising young sire Trapeze Artist, and Kerber (2f I Am invincible), the full sister to dual Group I winner In Secret that made $1.15million at Magic Millions.

The $10million Pierro frilly from Winx is in the Golden Slipper entries.

The Waller stable entries include the $10million Pierro filly from world champion Winx, however while her sire did win the Golden Slipper and was the Champion 2YO of his generation, this filly does give the impression time will be her friend and the Golden Rose and Eagle may prove more in her comfort zone.

Interesting named entry in the Waller list is Bella Wahine, the half-sister by Wootton Bassett (GB) to current stable star Fangirl.
