One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Saturday July 13

The Justify (USA) x Fastnet Rock nick has been lethal and produced an eye-catching debut juvenile winner at Newcastle on Saturday for the powerful Kris Lees stable.

Sent out favourite for the 1200m juvenile maiden, Lutetia jumped quickly for Andrew Gibbons to take the lead and kicked away in the straight to win by more than a length eased down.

Lutetia was bred and retained to race by Coolmore and runs in the their navy blue colours. She is the third winner from three foals to race from well bred Fastnet Rock mare Peaceful Sea, who was bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds and purchased by Coolmore for $1.75million back at Inglis Easter in 2015 from the Segenhoe draft.

Peaceful Sea has an international pedigree being a grand-daughter of stakes-winner Bright Candles, the dam of multiple Group I winning sire Grand Slam.

Peaceful Sea had a filly by Home Affairs last spring and is due to foal again to Justify.

Justify (USA) is remaining in Kentucky this year for Coolmore.

The Justify x Fastnet Rock nick has produced 16 winners from 22 starters including four stakes-winners at 18% SW to runner. The star performers for the nick are top class Group II winners Storm Boy and Learning to Fly, who have both been Group I placed.

Justify remains in Kentucky for Coolmore this year, but covered 188 mares last spring in Australia so will have a sizable foal crop on the ground here in 2024.
