River (Bank) on Dalasan

Breednet - Tuesday July 9

South Australian bred horses are renowned for punching well above their weight and the incredibly tough and versatile, DALASAN, is a shining example.

For five seasons – from two to six years – Dalasan mixed it with the elite, counting among his six stakes victories the Group 2 Danehill Stakes down the famous Flemington straight six, defeating the likes of Dubious, Strasbourg and Super Seth (all now standing at stud).

Dalasan will have his first foals being born this spring, click for more info.

Capable of producing lightning speed (Dalasan’s debut victory was over 1000m before a lip second in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce at start #3), he would run a game second to Russian Camelot in the 2500m South Australian Derby.

Indeed, some of Dalasan’s finest performances were placings in the Doncaster and Epsom (both over a mile) and, in successive years, a third and a fourth respectively in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth (2000m).

Dalasan would cap his career with a victory in the Listed Leon Macdonald Stakes – over 1400m – as a 6YO!, ultimately winning $3.5 million in stakes.

It was hardly surprising then that such a positive resume resulted in a bountiful opening book of mares after retiring to Victoria’s Riverbank Farm in 2023.

“He (Dalasan) ended up covering 76 mares last spring and naturally we’re super keen about seeing his first foals,” Riverbank Farm’s Russell Osborne points out. “He’s a striking individual so we’ll be very happy campers if he throws them to type.

(Dalasan is one of only five Victorian-based first season sires to have covered 75 or more mares in 2023).

“And we won’t be the only ones … Dalasan received a lot of support from South Australian breeders including Harry Perks – who bred and raced Dalasan – and hugely successful farms like Mill Park who also sent a number of mares.

“Harry has already committed to sending more mares in 2024 and we’re tipping broodmare owners will back him in when they see a few foals on the ground … especially as he’s standing at a fee of just $5,500.”

Dalasan is by European Horse of the Year, Dalakhani and is entirely free of Danehill and Sir Tristram blood, making him an ideal outcross.

Dalasan stands alongside Boulder City ($4.4k), Prince of Caviar ($4.4k), Redente ($3.3k), Skilled ($3.3k) and Wayed Zain ($2.2k) this spring and for further information phone Russell Osborne on 0423 768 155 or Caroline Osborne on 0401 364 18
