Japanese Select Sale Begins on Monday

Mark Smith - Sunday July 7

The Japan Racing Horse Association will stage its Select Sale at Northern Horse Park, Hokkaido, on July 8 and 9, featuring 243 yearlings catalogued for Monday and 253 foals on Tuesday.

Australian representation is comparatively light.

Kizuna colt foal from she Will Reign.

The Golden Slipper and Moir Stakes winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) has a colt foal by the leading stallion Kizuna (lot 433).

She Will Reign has two winners from as many to race, with Danon Tornado (Heart's Cry) Group II-placed and the 3-year-old Diamond Rain (Satono Diamond) breaking his maiden at Kyoto in May.

Some other foals of interest include (lot 327) a colt by Indy Champ from the Redoute's Choice mare Gienah from the family of European Horse Of The Year Zarkava, (lot 412) a Contrail colt out of Nicamorae (More Than Ready), a half-sister to Group 1 winner Nicconi and Niconero, (lot 481) a colt by Rey De Oro out of the former top-class Star Thoroughbreds colour-bearer Driefontein the winner of the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes.

In the yearling section (lot 45) is a Real Steel half-brother to WS Cox Plate heroine and Japanese Horse Of The Year Le Gracieux, (lot 67) is an Essential Quality colt out of Red Lark, winner of the Del Mar Oaks and one of the Gr1 winners for Epaulette, (lot 243) the last yearling to go through the ring is a Lord Kanaloa colt of the Deep Impact mare Calico a sister to multiple Gr III winner and Gr 1 placed Primo Scene, and half to dual Listed winner Danon Ayers Rock out of Fastnet Rock's triple Group 1 winner Mosheen.

There will be massive interest in the three foals from the first crop of the imperious Flightline, and all are out of Gr 1 winners.

When the Japanese go shopping for broodmares, they splash out for the crème de la crème in America. The catalogue is chockful of Grade 1 winners, and they must have vacuumed up every top-flight winner in Argentina.

There are 13 yearlings and 19 foals by Kitasan Black, the sire of Equinox, and 8 yearlings and 25 foals by the champion Contrail.

The catalogue features single lots by sire sensations Gun Runner and Justify in the foal section, and Justify has one in the yearlings.

Coolmore Stud's St Mark's Basilica has one first-crop yearling on offer out of the Argentinian champion Carta Embrujada, and Wootton Bassett has a yearling out of the stakes-placed Dubawi mare Forever Be.
