Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Plenty of interesting trials at Randwick on Friday morning with seven heats won by two year-olds that included the half-sister by Pierro to Everest hero Classique Legend and we also had a look at the three-quarter sister to Winx and while she didn’t win her heat it was definitely a pass mark.

Trained by John O’Shea, Pierro filly Candlewick has a big pedigree as a half-sister to Classique Legend and Group II winner Aethero and was retained by Tyreel Stud, who sold her dam Pinocchio for $1.15million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale this year. She has obviously got some of the family ability finding the line well under a hold to win the 738m heat by half a length at her first public outing.

Her $2million older three year-old half-sister I Am Famous won her second race earlier this week and you can read about her here.

Another unraced blueblood filly is the Michael Freedman trained Wings of Desire, a three-quarter sister by Pride of Dubai to the world champion Winx. She had a trial back in February when everything that could go wrong did and she finished last, but this time things went more smoothly. She jumped on terms from a wide gate but was allowed to find her feet by Tommy Berry and steamed to the line under a hold for second behind three year-old filly Are Ee Que.

A homebred for Fairway Thoroughbreds, Wings of Desire is the last foal of Vegas Showgirl, who sadly passed away at Segenhoe Stud last year.  Vegas Showgirl had four foals to race all winners, so Wings of Desire will be looking to keep her mother’s record perfect.

Peter and Paul Snowden have taken a patient approach with I Am Invincible filly Twirling, who has now had five trials and the last two have been wins this preparation so she does look ready to get to the races. This was her best to date and she led all the way and held off Dawn Service, the Justify (USA) colt from champion filly Sunlight.

Twirling is a homebred for Mrs Belinda Bateman and is from stakes-placed Lonhro mare Twirl, who comes from the family of champion sire Fastnet Rock.

Visually impressive was the David Pfieffer trained big strapping Toronado (IRE) colt Call Me Mojo, who charged to the line from back in the field to win by two and a half lengths at his second trial.

A $400,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Anton Koolman Bloodstock from the draft of Collingrove Stud, Call Me Mojo was the most expensive yearling by his sire at that sale and his third highest priced of 2023.

Call Me Mojo made $400,000 for good reason, great sort!

Call Me Mojo is the second foal of Mojo Moon, a winning half-sister to Group III winner Testashadow from the family of champion sire Zoustar.

Additional winners were: Kingdom Undersiege (I Am Invincible), Cash and Cards (Written Tycoon), Enter the Dragon (Capitalist), Comme Ci Comme Ca (Capitalist).
