New Winners for Tassort and Brutal

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday June 19

The Chris Waller stable produced another new metro juvenile winner on Wednesday with Tassort filly Good Sort opening her account at Canterbury, while Tassort’s Newgate barn mate Brutal chimed in with a winner of his own with a debut victory at Balaklava for Big Brute.

Fourth at her first two starts, Good Sort was well primed for the 1250m fillies maiden and even though she had to travel wide in the run for Zac Lloyd, she found plenty when challenged to win by half a length.

“She was fantastic, it was a good tough win,” said Zac Lloyd.

“She got into a really lovely rhythm even out where she was.”

A homebred for Grand Parkview Stud, Good Sort is a half-sister to a pair of metropolitan winners so is the third metro winner from Canossa, a metro winning Haradasun grand-daughter of stakes-winner Lady of the Desert.

Canossa has been a regular visitor to the Newgate sires and has a yearling colt by Tassort, weanling colt by Profiteer and was covered last spring by Artorius.

Over in South Australia, well named Brutal gelding Big Brute was an eye-catching debut winner for the Chris Bieg stable.

Easy in the market, he charged into the picture late, powering between runners to win over 1200m by a length and a half going away.

Bred by SF Bloodstock and Blake Sandblom, Big Brute was sold by Newgate through the 2022 Inglis Digital November (early) Sale for $11,000 to Chris Bieg, who looks like he’s found a bargain!

Big Brute made $11,000 in Inglis digital - a diamond in the rough! - click to see his sale page.

Big Brute is the second winner from well bred Street Cry (IRE) mare Tree of Jesse, a metro winning half-sister to stakes-winner Related and Group II placed Generosa, dam of Group II winner No Evidence Needed, who has made her mark at stud this year producing Group I winning juvenile Move to Strike.

Newgate sold an Extreme Choice yearling colt from Tree of Jesse at Inglis Easter this year for $230,000 to Star Thoroughbreds / Randwick Bloodstock Agency and she has another Extreme choice filly to follow.

Good Sort is the ninth winner for Tassort and Big Brute is the eighth winner for Brutal.
