Smart Debut Winner for Exceedance

Tara Madgwick - Monday June 17

Vinery Stud sires have been on fire over the last few days with young gun Exceedance producing Sydney metro winner on Saturday in Swift Falcon and on Monday he produced a stylish debut winner at Muswellbrook in the shape of Etude.

Astute trainer Kris Lees is often lethal when he sends a promising juvenile to the country and punters were all over Exceedance filly Etude, who went out favourite for the 1000m maiden taking on older rivals.

The fleet footed filly lived up to expectation when dashing clear and despite racing greenly at the finish had enough left to win by three-quarters of a length in an encouraging performance.

A homebred for Kia Ora Stud and partners, Etude is the first foal of well related Sebring mare Sangita, a two time winner whose dam is a half-sister to champion sprinter and Group I sire Starspangledbanner with the family also producing Group I winner Amicus, the dam of colt Chief Little Rock, who is entered for Royal Ascot later this week.

Kia Ora sold a Farnan yearling colt from Sangita at Magic Millions this year for $280,000 to Bahen Bloodstock/Kris Lees Racing, so he will no doubt join his older half-sister Etude in the stable of the champion Newcastle trainer.

Sangita had a filly by Captivant last spring and is now back in foal to Farnan.

Etude it the sixth winner for Exceedance and two of them are Group winners Dublin Down and Flyer with Vinery Stud electing to keep his fee on a par with last year at $33,000.
