Don't Russia Impresses on Debut

Mark Smith - Tuesday June 11

Two smart Russian Revolution debutants fought out the finish of the Fantasy Cocktails Maiden Plate (1112m) on a bleak day at Sale on Tuesday, but unfortunately for punters, it was the $71 chance Don’t Russia, turning over the favourite Supervise.

Ridden by Sheridan Clarke for Craig Blackshaw, Don’t Russia took advantage of an inside barrier to take the sit behind Supervise, who flew the barriers.

As Supervise drifted out to the centre of the track, Don’t Russia came through on the inside to defeat Supervise by a length with four lengths back to the Jabali gelding Almighty Jab in third.

The winner and runner-up were bought for $100,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Consigned by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds, Don’t Russia was purchased by Blackshaw Racing / A Lafontaine/ P Macvean.

“We’ve always liked her, and I told anyone that would listen to have a couple of bucks on her,” Blackshaw said.

“Tommy Stockdale rode her at the Pakemham jump-outs, and she pinged the lids and got a little lost in front; she improved when asked, and he then sat up on her.

“We got her at the Premier Sale last year. We have a great bunch of owners who spend about $100,000 on one horse every year. So, we don’t get a heap of yearlings; we try to be selective, and so far, so good with this one.”

Don't Russia a $100,000 Inglis Premier yearling

Don’t Russia is the first foal of the Dissident mare Kahlo, who won races at Coonamble and Dubbo for Clint Lundholm.

Kahlo’s dam Spurs and Sashes (Flying Spur) is a half-sister to Group II MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes winner Sabatini and Group III SAJC The Jansz winner Vivi Veloce.
