First Season Fire Power – 2018 MM 2YO Classic Field

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 8
The field for the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic this year has delivered an unprecedented level of success for our first season sires with representation for Spirit of Boom, Zoustar and Epaulette, sparking keen interest in the new crop of freshman sires with progeny on offer in 2018.

Not only are the young guns represented, they also hold all the aces with the top three contenders Jonker (Spirit of Boom), Ef Troop (Spirit of Boom) and Sunlight (Zoustar) with stakes-winners Meryl (Epaulette) and Outback Barbie (Spirit of Boom) not far behind.

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic barrier draw will be held at Surfers Paradise on Tuesday morning.

Speculating on the progeny of first season sires can hold tremendous upside if you choose wisely… wouldn't we all love to have bought an I Am Invincible when his progeny first appeared at the Gold Coast in 2013.

They averaged just $81,667 and then at this sale in 2017, I Am Invincible averaged $318,205, quite a spectacular jump in price over five years!

When a stallion hits the big time, he brings all his supporters along for the ride so getting in on the ground floor is often a game changer.

Deep Field has more entries at the 2018 Magic Millions than any other sireThe first season horses for buyers to consider this year are a diverse group ranging from a Cox Plate winner in Adelaide (IRE) to Australian Horse of the Year Dissident as well as Champion 3YO Colt Brazen Beau, Group I VRC Australian Guineas winner Wandjina, Group I ATC Randwick Guineas and Golden Rose winner Hallowed Crown, Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting to Win, Champion European Milers Olympic Glory (IRE), Charm Spirit (IRE) and Toronado (IRE) and Invincible Spirit's flashy grey son Zebedee (IGB), already a stakes producing sire in Europe.

As we have seen in the past with I Am Invincible, a Group I sire does not necessarily have to have a Group I win on his resume and horses like Deep Field, Rubick, Better Than Ready and Time for War all have good numbers, particularly Deep Field, who has more entries in this sale than any other stallion!

History shows us that one or more stallions from this group will emerge as big winners, the question is who?
