Guineas Double for Too Darn Hot

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 27

Darley shuttler Too Darn Hot (GB) was a sire on fire overnight in Europe with his glamour filly Fallen Angel taking out the Group I Irish 1000 Guineas (1m) at The Curragh for the Karl Burke stable while over in Germany her stablemate by the same sire Darnation won the Group II German 1000 Guineas (1m) at Dusseldorf.

A Group I winner last year at two, Fallen Angel was eighth in the Group I Newmarket 1000 Guineas when making her seasonal return, but bounced back in impressive fashion for Daniel Tudhope to win the Irish 1000 Guineas by nearly three lengths over A Lilac Rolla (Harry Angel )with Justify filly Opera Singer in third place.

“We were disappointed with the Guineas (Newmarket). We sent Fallen Angel to Newmarket fit and she didn't blow that much afterwards. The ground maybe was a bit quick on the undulations, but that's looking for excuses, we were beaten fair and square on the day,” said Karl Burke.

“She just sparked up in the last week, and physically she looked fantastic today.”

Royal Ascot or the French Oaks seem to be likely target races for Fallen Angel, who has four wins and a second from six starts and is the first three year-old Group I winner for Too Darn Hot, who returns to Darley NSW this spring at a fee of $110,000.

Fallen Angel was bred by Steve Parkin’s Branton Court Stud and was retained to race. She is a half-sister to stakes-placed Divine Jewel from Group II winning Lawman mare Agnes Stewart and is the final foal of the mare, who was a half-sister to stakes-winner Sorrel from the family of Group I winner Definite Article.

Karl Burke was also celebrating the win of his other Too Darn Hot filly Darnation, who went to Germany after she too returned in the Group I Newmarket 1000 Guineas with an unplaced run.

She ploughed through wet ground to win the German 1000 Guineas by more than two lengths as favourite.

A homebred for Newtown Anner Stud, Darnation was a Group II winner last season and has four wins from seven starts.

She is the first winner from Monday Monday, an unraced half-sister by Galileo to Champion 3YO Filly Blue Bunting and to the dam of Group III winner Poker Face and stakes-winner Star Devine.
