Jungle Cat Filly Excites on Debut

Mark Smith - Sunday May 12

It was a matter of dig where you struck gold before when Proven Thoroughbreds purchased a Jungle Cat (IRE) filly for $95,000 from the Telemon Thoroughbreds draft at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Sent to Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted, the filly named Zatanna debuted in a low-key Saturday meeting at Ipswich.

Even on a day of stakes racing around the nation, Zatanna made a statement with a six and three-quarter length win under Emily Lang in an 800m maiden.

Zatanna is the first foal of the Hinchinbrook mare Brook Magic, a $40,000 buy for Proven Thoroughbreds / Pride Racing from the Fairview Park Stud draft at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

An honest performer for Joe Pride, Brook Magic won five and placed in six of her 25 starts, banking $325,185.

Zatanna a $95,000 Magic Millions yearling

Stakes-placed in the Listed June Stakes at Randwick, Brook Magic was a $130,000 purchase for Telemon Thoroughbreds at the 2020 National Broodmare Sale.

Zatanna is her first foal, but it has been a tale of woe since then. Her Zoustar colt died after birth, and she missed to Spirit of Boom in 2022 before revisiting him last spring.
