Australian bred horses have competed very successfully in South Africa over the years and a significant number of Aus bred mares are now at stud over there and one of them is the dam of talented four year-old Royal Aussie, who won the Group II Drill Hall Stakes (1400m) at Greyville in South Africa on Wednesday.

From the first crop of Royal Mo (USA), a Group III winning son of Uncle Mo, Royal Aussie is the second winner from Abelia, an unraced Smart Missile mare that was purchased for just $20,000 from the Arrowfield draft at the 2015 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.

Trained by Justin Snaith, Royal Aussie has been competing successfully for the past few seasons with numerous feature wins and a couple of Group I placings to go with this latest victory.

Ridden perfectly by Richard Fourie, Royal Aussie scored by a neck and has the overall record of six wins and seven placings from 18 starts.

Royal Aussie also has an Aussie in his ownership and races for Dane Squance, who co-owns the talented four year-old with Champion South Africa owner Suzette Viljoen and Dr Jill Warner.

His pedigree will be very familiar to local breeders as his dam Abelia is a half-sister to Group II winner Time for War, stakes-winner Lord Olympus and stakes-placed Lord Cecil from good producer Lady Zabelia

This is the immediate family of Group I winners Lucky Owners and Mosheen, who produced a stakes-winner in Japan last weekend in Danon Ayers Rock.

The family appears at the Inglis Broodmare Sale on Friday with Lot 273 from Segenhoe Stud.

Tavistock mare Sheza Flyer (NZ) is a full sister to Group III winner Hiflyer and is in foal to Too Darn Hot (GB) in her first season at stud.
