Debut Winner for Gilgai Bred and Sold Grunt

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 6

Gilgai Farm have bred champions such as Black Caviar, All Too Hard and Ole Kirk and they also bred and sold eye-catching debut winner Ailyak, who scored at Werribee on Monday for the Ciaron Maher stable.

The 1400m maiden had a very short priced favourite in I Am Invincible colt Money Team, but he had no answer when Ailyak let down with a big finish to run straight past him and win by a couple of lengths with a five length margin back to the third horse.

“He’s still raw and doesn’t really know what’s going on, but he was able to put them away,” said winning rider Jamie Mott.

“No doubt he’ll get further and he’s in a good stable to keep improving.”

Ailyak was a $155,000 Magic Millions Weanling Sale purchase for Wayne Armstrong from the Gilgai Farm draft and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Oscar Zulu being the third winner from Ininthree (NZ), a winning sibling by Generous (GB) to Group I winners Tiger Tees and Terravista as well as Grou[ II winner Ball of Muscle and stakes-winners Super Easy and Our Lukas.

Ailyak is the 18th winner this season for Yulong based Grunt, who has had elite success as a sire through his Group I winning colt Veight.
