Winning Rupert Mare Seonee Salutes in G2 Queen Of The South Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday April 27

The 5yo Winning Rupert mare Seonee has won two stakes races in as many starts at Morphettville, the latest coming in Saturday’s $250,000 Group II Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m).

Ridden by Billy Egan for Patrick Payne, the Prime Thoroughbreds colour bearer defeated the 4-year-old Toronado (IRE) mare Lady Jonesby one and a half lengths with the 5-year-old Fiorente (IRE) mare Silent Surrente back in third.

The Listed SAJC Leon Macdonald Stakes winner last August, Seonee advances her record to nine wins, three seconds, and two thirds from 22 starts with earnings of $592,055.

“We’re absolutely thrilled. We’ve got a heap of owners here,” Prime Throughbred’s Joe O’Neill said.

“She’s just a lovely mare. We didn’t pay much for her, and she’s been fantastic. Paddy Payne, what a training performance, and Billy Egan, what a ride.”

“She’s a lot stronger now than what she was. Who knows, next year the Coolmore Classic or races like that. She’s a much better mare when we can get a wet track, but we just haven’t had them.

“Full credit to Yarraman Park that bred her. We buy a lot of horses off Yarraman and have a lot of success.”

Billy Egan has a wonderful record on the mare. She’s now won nine races and is the second-most winning mare from the 2021 Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast behind Imperatriz.

“She’s done a great job and Paddy has brought her along gently, let her develop, didn’t push and look what we have today.”

“I think there’s a race in Brisbane, a mile and then there’s the Tatt’s Tiara. They’re probably her next two runs if we decide to go that far otherwise we can put her away. We just don’t know how far she can take us.”

Bred and offered for sale by Yarraman Park Stud, Seonee was an $80,000 purchase for Prime Thoroughbreds at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is the best of two winners from three to race for the Not A Single Doubt mare Mowgli.

A half-sister to the champion Hong Kong sprinter Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook), Mowgli was a $50,000 purchase for Bill Mitchell (FBAA) from the Newgate Farm draft at the 2017 National Broodmare Sale.

Mowgli has a weanling filly foal by Hellbent and visited him again last spring.

Seonee is one of four stakes winners for Winning Rupert, who is settling in to make his debut season at Geisel Park Stud, where his fee has been set at $8,800.
