Second Win for $3million Zoustar Colt Highlights a Famous Family

Tara Madgwick - Monday April 1

Kandinsky Abstract was the most expensive yearling in Australia in 2022 when sold by Widden Stud for $3million at Inglis Easter and the Zoustar colt posted his second win at Warwick Farm on Easter Monday.

Sale-topper at Inglis Easter 2022 - Kandinsky Abstract.

The full brother to Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner and Champion 3YO Filly Sunlight, Kandinsky Abstract has been a work in progress at the Chris Waller stable winning his debut at Canterbury in May last year beating subsequent Group I ATC Randwick Guineas winner Celestial Legend.

A powerful colt with a muscular physique, he didn’t quite measure up to stakes class last spring when sent to Melbourne, so has been given an easier path to start off with this year.

With two recent trials under his belt, Kandinsky Abstract was sent off favourite for the 1200m Benchmark 72 event with James McDonald to ride and did his best work in the final furlong to poke his nose in front for a thrilling win.

He will no doubt take good improvement from the win and confidence going forward.

Purchased by Tom Magnier for the Coolmore partners, Kandinsky Abstract was bred by Widden in partnership and is the seventh winner from eight to race from Group III winner Solar Charged, who is also the dam of triple Group I winner Sunlight, Group III winner Sisstar and stakes-placed Sheika and Dio.

Her current two year-old is an unraced Zoustar filly called Clean Energy that was bought by Yulong for $2.6million at Magic Millions last year and has had one trial last November for a second placing and is in the Waterhouse Bott stable.

Widden Stud have had some massive sale ring results through selling yearlings from Solar Charged and will offer another Zoustar colt as Lot 304 at Inglis Easter this year.

Widden Stud / Qatar Bloodstock purchased Solar Charged from the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2014 for $650,000 after she had produced two foals for her previous owner and her first foal for them, a filly by Sebring sold at Inglis Easter for $350,000 in 2016 followed by Sunlight, who sold for $300,000 at Magic Millions the next year.

When Sunlight came out and did what she did it upped the ante for Solar Charged and she has proven an absolute goldmine for her owners.

She has produced seven sales yearlings for Widden and partners and they have sold for a combined total of $8.6million!

Solar Charged missed in 2022, so had no foal last year and is now back in foal to Zoustar.

Sunlight sold as a broodmare prospect for $4.2million.

Kandinsky Abstract aside, Coolmore and partners have another important piece of this family as they have Sunlight in the paddock at home having purchased her for $4.2million at the MM National Broodmare Sale in 2020.

Her first foal, a colt by Justify (USA), sold for $1.4million at Magic Millions last year and her second is a yearling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB) they will offer at Inglis Easter as Lot 329.
