Where Are the Colts?

Tara Madgwick - Thursday December 14
In this new age of supposed equality for all one would like to think it might extend to the horse world, but at Doomben on Saturday the Listed juvenile events seen as traditional Magic Millions lead up races feature 15 fillies plus three emergencies in the Calaway Gal Stakes, but just six entries for the colts and geldings equivalent, the Phelan Ready.

Spirit of BoomYou'd love to own a colt this year as the path to earn enough prizemoney to secure a start in the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic next month will be comparatively smoother than if you have a filly, who needs to get lucky just to secure a start in a lead up race!

First season sires are set to play a role in these pivotal races on Saturday with current division leader Spirit of Boom represented by smart debut winner Ef Troop in the Phelan Ready and a further two fillies –  Outback Barbie and Spirit's Choice – in the Calaway Gal.

Sizzling will seek to make an impact with Sugar Sizzle and Sizzling Ace, while Zoustar has a very interesting runner in Sunlight.

Stakes-placed at her only outing at Flemington in October, she won a trial at the Gold Coast last week.

Nearly all runners in these two stakes races are Magic Millions eligible, so click here to see the Sale Mail with yearling images.
