War Chant's War Room Opens Stakes Account

Mark Smith - Saturday December 9

The Darren Mcauliffe-trained War Room kept his record at a perfect three for three when turning back the challenge of Godolphin's Street Cry colt Gaulois in Saturday's Listed Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic (1400m) at Ascot.

Ridden by Lee Newman, the 3yo son of War Front fought bravely down the straight to defeat Gaulois by a long-head with Reykjavik (Artie Schiller) two lengths back in third.

It was a considerable step up in class for War Room following wins at Bunbury and Northam.

A homebred for Impressive Racing, War Room is the second live foal of the Listed WATC Burgess Queen Stakes winner Impressing Matters (Viscount) whose dam Serious Matter (Carry a Smile) was placed in the Group 1 Karrakatta Plate.

Serious Matter is also the dam of the Listed WATC Crystal Slipper Stakes winner Genuine Girl (Is It True) who produced the 2008 Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic winner Destino (Bletchley Park).

Impressing Matters has a 2yo colt by the Encosta de Lago stallion My Admiration and has a colt foal by the Group II ATC Shorts winner Sessions (Lonhro).

War Room becomes the 38th stakes winner for the Breeders' Cup Mile winner War Chant (Danzig).
