Duais Retired to Yulong

Tara Madgwick - Friday March 8

Edward Cummings released a statement on Thursday announcing the unfortunate news that his stable star Duais had suffered an injury and will be retired to stud joining the extensive broodmare band at Yulong.

A six year-old daughter of Cox Plate winning sire Shamus Award, Duais shot to fame winning the 2021 Group I BRC Queensland Oaks following a second in the Australian Oaks at Randwick.

The following autumn she added G1 wins in the VRC Australian Cup and ATC Tancred Stakes to her resume and retires with the record of seven wins and nine placings from 33 starts with earnings topping $4million.

Duais was bred and originally raced by Matthew Irwin and the Harris family before being purchased by Yulong privately last spring before she ran second in the Group I VRC Champions Stakes to Atishu.

Duais finished eighth last Saturday when resuming from a spell, but has since developed swelling in her off fore-leg resulting from an injury to a medial suspensory branch with the decision made to retire her to stud.

“We are very fortunate to have had Duais come into our lives and develop into the magnificent mare she is today,” said Edward Cummings.

“She showed sparkling brilliance and gut-wrenching determination and toughness on the track. Some of her losses provided some of her greatest performances.

“All of those associated closely with our stable, as well as many away from it will miss seeing her on the track at Hawkesbury and on the racetrack.

“We know we will never have another Duais, but we hope to find one just like her.”
