Stakes Breakthrough for Megamea

Mark Smith - Wednesday February 28

Placed at her last two starts in the Group II Mystic Journey Stakes and Listed Black Pearl Stakes, Megamea had her day in the sun Wednesday’s Armidale Stud Vamos Stakes (1400m) at Launceston.

Ridden by Craig Williams for Luke Oliver, the 7-year-old daughter of Master Of Design launched down the centre of the track to defeat the luckless Churchill (IRE) mare Jenny Jerome with the local hope Alvarinho (Tough Speed) back in third.

A $5,000 buy for her popular owner and former trainer Udyta Clarke from the Swettenham Stud draft at the 2017 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, Megamea advances her record to seven wins, six seconds, and eight thirds from 38 starts with earnings of $578,760.

Happy days (image Racing Photos)

It’s great to win for Udyta, she is an amazing ambassador with a love for the horse, and it’s great to see her here as she is not in the best of health,” Williams said.

“Look is a great trainer, and the horse was dominant today. She ran well the other day, had the sweetest ride, and, most importantly, behaved well in the race.

“The last ride I had on her was when she was scratched at the barrier on Ballarat Cup day when she got a leg up on the barrier.”

Megamea a $5,000 Inglis Great Southern Weanling

Bred by Adam Sangster, Megamea is the best of four winners from seven to race for the Encosta de Lago mare Haumea, a half-sister to the magnificent broodmare Imposingly, whose six stakes-winners were led by the ATC Australian Oaks, MRC Underwood Stakes, and WRC New Zealand Oaks winner Bonneval.

Haumea has a 2-year-old colt by Wrote and a yearling Tivaci colt. She was covered by Santos last spring.

Megamea is the third stakes-winner for Master Of Design who last stood in 2021.
