Weekend to remember for Alwyn Park’s John Andrew

Alwyn Park owner John Andrew came back to earth on Monday morning following a weekend to remember during Magic Millions Raceday at Pinjarra and TBWA Awards in the Swan Valley.

Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Big Shots (Sizzling) and Magic Millions 3YO Trophy winner Bondi Bubbles (Bondi) are both Alwyn Park graduates of the 2023 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale. 

Andrew joined Mungrup Stud’s Gray Williamson who doubled up as a vendor in 2017 with Lucky Street (Oratorio) in the 2YO Classic and Red Ora (Due Sasso) in the 3YO Trophy.

The WA breeding industry capped celebrations on Sunday evening when they saluted Andrew following the 2022-23 TBWA Awards that had been held over from December.  Andrew is a Life Member of TBWA and the ceremony included a presentation highlighting Alwyn Park’s success that was compiled by Austen Borsi, Ngyrie Gonzales and Steve Hoare.

They saluted Andrew’s 50-year career as a vendor going back to his first Perth Sale working for Karnup Stud owner Jeremy Hayes.  Korilya Stud’s Ellie Giles was similarly recognised for her lifelong service and success in the industry.

Come Monday morning, John was back at ground level parading the 14 yearlings that make up the latest consignment from Alwyn Park. 

“Your horses have got to do the talking for you and over the years some pretty handy ones have come off the farm,” he told the MMWA Magazine.  “Our yearlings are by Maschino, Playing God, Per Incanto, I’m All The Talk, God Has Spoken and Ducimus.  We’re also working in partnership to offer yearlings from Rivercrest Park Stud.”

Magic Millions has encouraged buyers to be weather-savvy and to be mindful of both horses and humans during the current heatwave in the west.  Buyers will continue to be active with early inspections leading up to the Sale which is forecast to be conducted in cooler conditions.

Lot 36

Alwyn Park stallion Maschino (Encosta De Lago) starts the home-base draft with the Maschino - Classical Snow filly (Lot 36).  “She’s a very nice full-sister to the Starstruck Classic winner Snowchino and to three-time winner Nero King,” Andrew added.  “Their dam was bred by Ellie.”

Another Maschino on Day 1 is the colt out of Glamour Belle (Blackfriars) catalogued as Lot 65.  He is being sold as agent for Bill and Patricia Robinson who board the majority of their mares with John and his wife Sandra in Serpentine.  The Robinsons bred and raced Trix Of The Trade who arrived in the final crop of former Alwyn Park sire Trade Fair (GB) to win the G1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in 2022.

Incoming TBWA committeeman Peter Vincent has a well-bred daughter of Playing God from Miss Wild (Lot 287) with Alwyn Park.  The dam is an unraced Gingerbread Man daughter of LR Beaufine Stakes winner Lady Wild (Wild Harmony).

Lot 305 is a sibling to Big Shots.

Joslyn Summerhayes sold Big Shots for $27,500 through Alwyn Park last year and she’s back with a King’s Troop half-brother to the MM 2YO Classic winner as Lot 305 on Friday.  Trainer Luke Fernie and part-owner Kim Doaks will set Big Shots for the LR Perth Stakes as a stepping-stone to the G2 Karrakatta Plate and G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes.
