Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 12

The Warwick Farm trials this morning kicked off with a super interesting heat featuring Everest winner Think About It and the new Joe Pride stable acquisition Mazu with five heats won by juveniles including two winners for Microphone and the return of exciting colt Straight Charge.

Think About It looked awesome in his trial and Don Corleone should enjoy his head win over the $11million earner as he won’t be beating him in a race any time soon. I Am Invincible colt King’s Gambit was again ridden cold in his second trial back and charged to the line for third under a throttle hold. Group I winning sprinter Mazu was unable to find form last spring and has been transferred from Peter and Paul Snowden to Joe Pride, so it’s going to be fascinating to see if he can recapture his best in a new environment and today’s trial was an encouraging enough start.

Joe Pride is a genius with the older horses, but rarely runs his two year-olds, however he did produce this heat winner Maikrow, who improved sharply at his second trial. Jumping from an outside gate, he travelled three deep all the way and when asked to go forward in the straight found the line well for Sam Clipperton to win by half a length eased down on the line.

Bought by his trainer for $120,000 at Magic Millions, Maikrow is the third foal of unraced Commands mare Wake, a half-sister to stakes-winners Bello, Emblems and Trenchant with his third dam outstanding European Group I winning sprinter Cherokee Rose.

The Waterhouse Bott stable have been dominating the juvenile features and while Written By colt Straight Charge missed the Magic Millions due to an elevated temperature, he looked sharp and ready to pick up where he left off in his trial today.

Second in the Breeders Plate and a brilliant winner at his only other run at Randwick in December, Straight Charge looks like making a late charge at the Golden Slipper for Yulong, who stand his grand-sire Written Tycoon.

Other juvenile heat winners were: Erno’s Cube (Rubick), And Found (Microphone) and Roselyn’s Star (Shalaa (IRE).
