Sire Metrics are What Matters

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 12

With the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in full swing and a run of sales to follow the demand for information that can narrow the search for buyers and enhance their chances of success is at a premium so we’re taking a look at overall stats for proven active sires.

Below is a list featuring lifetime worldwide stats for many of the sires whose progeny are being offered at sales this year, although no first, second or third crop sires are included as in this context their stats are not going to be meaningful unless compared to each other.

Also of the sires whose oldest progeny are four year-olds, such as Hellbent, Russian Revolution and Supido, you need to take into account they are very much a work in progress and their winner to runner stat will improve over time as their oldest horses reach their full potential.

I Am Invincible

No surprises to see I Am Invincible on top ahead of Snitzel and Written Tycoon, but what is surprising is Star Turn sticking his head in there. A fast Group winning son of Star Witness, he gets winners and ultimately that’s the name of the game.

Extreme Choice

With fertility issues restricting his opportunity, Extreme Choice has certainly made his mark and has achieved impressive stats from OK to good mares, but certainly not great ones so what he does as time goes on will be interesting. As the sire of a Golden Slipper winner and an Oaks winner, he’s versatile and that’s a precious quality in a landscape slanted heavily to speed.

Savabeel is his father’s son and we live in hope he’ll get the right colt to carry on his legacy, while Playing God is the ‘best in the West’ and his yearlings will draw plenty of buyers to Perth later this month.
