Lady Laguna Makes it Three Feature Wins on the Trot

Tara Madgwick - Saturday February 3

Overshare mare Lady Laguna has been a woman on a mission over the summer for OTI Racing reeling off her third consecutive stakes win when taking out the $250,000 Group III ATC Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Trained by Annabel Neasham and ridden by James McDonald she was sent out favourite after wins on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast and in a Listed race at Doomben. She ran up to expectation when surging clear to win by nearly two lengths taking her overall record to six wins and 10 placings from 22 starts with prizemoney topping $1.4million.

“She’s a star, she’s three on the bounce now,” said Annabel Neasham.

“The great thing with her is she is so diverse, she’ll go on a bottomless track or a firm deck and she can be on speed or sit back. She makes her own lucky, is very tenacious and I think she will keep on improving.”

Bred by Spendthrift Australia, Lady Laguna is the best of two winners from three to race for the Encosta De Lago mare Catalina de Lago, a half-sister to Group II winner She Will Be Loved and to the dam of Group III winner Luke’s Luck. Also in the family is Group II winning filly Kristilli, who worked home well for fourth in the Southern Cross, which was encouraging following her disappointing spring efforts.

Catalina de Lago went through the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Consigned by Newgate she was sold to Kingstar Farm for $180,000 in foal to Overshare, but subsequently slipped. She was covered last spring by State of Rest (IRE).
