First Australian Winner for Calyx

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 31

A fast Group winning juvenile by Kingman, Calyx (GB) shuttled to Coolmore Australia for just two seasons and sired his first winner in Australia on Wednesday when the John O’Shea trained colt Getafix saluted on debut at Randwick.

Getafix was well fancied in a race that was expected to be won by expensive I Am Invincible colt Railway Man, but he failed to perform up to his trial credentials and faded from contention in the straight while Getafix hit the lien hard.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, Getafix was excitable before the race, but all business after the gates opened taking a position on the fence and then accelerating impressively when angled into the clear to win the 1250m juvenile maiden by half a length.

“He’ll be better suited at 1400 and 1600m, so I think we’ll give him a little break and look towards the latter part of the autumn,” said John O’Shea.

Getafix was a $100,000 Magic Millions purchase from Coolmore.

Getafix was a $100,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft for John O’Shea / Suman Hedge Bloodstock and was bred by Bob McKay, who retains a share in his ownership.

Foaled and raised at Coolmore, he is the second winner from Grisaille, a winning half-sister by Helmet to Group III winner Seaside from Group III winner Living Spirit. Grisaille had a filly by King’s Legacy last spring and is now in foal to Home Affairs.
