Ones to Watch – Sale

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 23

A couple of lightly raced maiden winners at Sale on Tuesday caught our eye as horses that can win much better races and one of them is named after the Australian of the Year in 2014.

The Rosemont / Victorian Stallion Alliance like naming their colts after famous AFL players and there are none more famous than Adam Goodes and his namesake saluted at Sale in good style after nearly  a year on the sidelines.

Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, Goodes had two starts last year finishing fifth in the Listed MRC Blue Diamond Preview on debut before going unplaced in the Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude and has been off the scene since then.

Set an easier task when resuming in the 1008 m maiden, he strode clear for an easy win scoring by two lengths as a short priced favoruite.

A $500,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Musk Creek Farm draft for Rosemont-Victorian Alliance/Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA)/David Redvers Bloodstock, Goodes is the first winner from Apologynotaccepted (USA), a Group II placed Fusaichi Pegasus half-sister to Group II winner Curlin’s Approval.

The previous race at Sale also produced a promising winner with Deep Field filly Down Low skipping clear to win by more than two lengths as a hot favourite in the 1108m maiden.

Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, Down Low was also resuming from a spell after two stakes -placings in Adelaide from her first three starts back in May last year.

She was green, but had way too much class for her rivals and will no doubt be headed back to Black Type after this soft confidence building win.

A $200,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Milburn Creek for Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) / Price Kent Racing, Down Low is the fourth winner from four to race  from Group I placed Redoute’s Choice mare Grand Daughter, a sister to Group II winner El Daana, the dam of dual Group I winner Al Muthana, who is by Down Low’s sire Deep Field.
