Shamus Award Filly The Black Cloud Remains Unbeaten

Mark Smith - Wednesday January 17

After noting The Black Cloud was a filly with a future when tagged a ‘One To Watch’ following her win in a competitive maiden at Gosford at her career debut, the daughter of Shamus Award kept her record at a perfect two for two at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday.

Ridden by Jay Ford for Joe Pride, the Proven Thoroughbred colour bearer was the least experienced in the benchmark 64 over 1100m.

Among the best to begin, The Black Cloud made the early running, but Kissing Supido kicked up on the rail, with Ford happy to stay off the fence.

When asked for an effort on straightening, The Black Cloud came clear to defeat the promising Deep Field colt Fire Star by one and a quarter lengths, with the Invader 4-year-old Royal Invader two lengths back in third.

“It’s a continuation of what we saw at Gosford, which is good because a lot of horses can win a maiden impressively and next start come against better class horses and not make the grade,” Joe Pride said.

“It was a moment of truth for her when challenged at the 150m, but she kicked on – a lot of heart. She is not just a speedy 1000m or 1100m horse. She should stretch to at least 1200m, which will open opportunities for her. She is thriving at home and has another run in her; then we will concentrate on the latter part of autumn in to the winter.”

The Black Cloud a $100,000 Inglis Classic yearling

A $100,000 purchase for Proven Thoroughbreds / Pride Racing from the Golden Grove draft at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, The Black Cloud, is the first foal of the 4-time winner Containment who hails from the family of 3-time Listed stakes-winner Janet Quill (Fan Letter).

A daughter of Krupt, Containment has a yearling filly by Doubtland. After foaling a  coly by Impending in August, Containment revisited the Darley-based son of Lonhro.
