One to Watch – Bargain Priced Zoustar

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 8

Zoustar will be one of the hottest sires in the sale ring at Magic Millions this week with his progeny averaging $628,667 last year, but one of his bargain priced yearlings snaffled from Inglis Classic in 2021 for $40,000 is building a good record in the country with more wins to come and a tilt at the $3million Big Dance.

Trained by Barb Joseph and Paul and Matt Jones, four year-old gelding Zouatic was a short priced favourite for the $75,000 Moruya Cup (1425m) on Monday and led his rivals a merry dance to win by nearly three lengths.

Zouatica has now won five of nine starts with two minor placings earning nearly $170,000 in prizemoney and is on track for a start in the $3million Big Dance later this year following this facile victory.

He is now heading towards the $1 million Country Championships in March and April ahead of a possible date with destiny in the $3 million Big Dance on the first Tuesday in November.

Zouatica was among the cheapest yearlings by Zoustar in 2021.

Bred and sold by Torryburn Stud and purchased by his trainers for just $40,000 at Inglis Classic, Zouatica was the second cheapest yearling by his champion sire at that sale, but time has been his best friend and the best is still to come.

Zouatica is the third winner from three foals to race from Axiomatic, a winning half-sister to dual Group I winner and Champion NZ 3YO Xtravagant and Group II winner He’s Remarkable.

Torryburn Stud have a terrific draft of 11 yearlings for Magic Millions.
