Straight to the Gold Coast for Written By 2YO Colt

Tara Madgwick - Saturday December 23

Widden Stud’s young gun sire Written By will have a live chance in the $3million Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January after the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt Straight Charge blitzed his rivals at Randwick on Saturday.

Having his first run since being narrowly beaten in the Group III ATC Breeders Plate during the spring, Straight Charge was well primed for his return with a couple of brilliant trial wins that put the writing on the wall for this performance.

Ridden by Tim Clark, Straight Charge jumped quickly as expected and cruised along in the lead before changing gears to drop the opposition and win the 1100m contest by three and a half lengths over smart winning filly Erno’s Cube.

uo;When Gai rang me this morning she said, ‘He won’t just win, he’ll annihilate them’,” said Clark.

“Sometimes they trial well and then don’t produce it on race day, but he’s done it today and he’ll still take some improvement.

“He developed a lot in his break and it’s all systems go now for the Magic Millions.”

Straight Charge was a $270,000 Magic Millions purchase.

A $270,000 Magic Millions purchase from Lime Country Thoroughbreds for Yulong, he was a successful pinhook having been bought originally from the Twin Hills draft at the Inglis Weanling Sale for $160,000 by Paul Moroney Bloodstock / Pegasus Bloodstock.

Bred by Scott and Kathy Robertson, Straight Charge is the second foal and second winner from placed I Am Invincible mare Matryoshka.

An $80,000 purchase for Ontrack Racing Syndicates/Brett Bowman at the 2016 Magic Millions, Matryoshka made just two starts for a fourth at the Gold Coast and a third at Dubbo.

Written By looked a logical choice for Matryoshka as she is a half-sister to Written Tycoon's Group II winning speedball, Winning Rupert, and his high-class sister Tycoon Evie, winner of the Group III BRC Pam O'Neill Stakes. She has no yearling for the 2024 sales, but produced another colt by Written By this year and then had a big upgrade to be covered by Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar and appears to be in foal.

Written By has a strong hand at Magic Millions with 21 entries for the Gold Coast.
