124th Stakes Winner for Fastnet Rock

Mark Smith - Sunday November 12

The flat season is drawing to a close in Europe, so it proved a timely win for Fastnet Rock's 3-year-old daughter Star Rock in the Listed Gillies Fillies' Stakes at Doncaster.

Finishing the best in the final furlong Star Rock defeated pacesetting Vintage Folly by three-quarters of a length with Melesina two and a half lengths away in third place.

The Hughie Morrison-trained filly has started 5 times this season for three wins, one second and a third.

Winning rider PJ McDonald said the stable came to the race with plenty of confidence.

"The boss was confident enough. With the ground being soft, he wasn't worried about stepping her down in trip," McDonald told Sporting Life.

"I got a little bit further back than I wanted to be, but she travelled so well and when the gaps appeared she picked them up and saw the trip out really well."

The daughter of Fastnet Rock is the best of three winners from as many starters out of the multiple Group II placed Galileo mare Starfala a half-sister to Listed winner and Group II Lancashire Oaks second Under The Rainbow (Fantastic Light).

Star Rock is the 124th stakes-winner for Coolmore's champion stallion Fastnet Rock who enjoyed another successful Spring Carnival with Shoals winning the Group 1 Myer Classic and Merchant Navy in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.
