Family Favourites and Nicks that Click - Karaka 2024

Sponsored Content - by Tara Madgwick - Monday December 18

The past week’s winners hold some Karaka intrigue with an unbeaten three year-old from a super popular Kiwi family, a quality mare on the cusp of a G1 win and an expensive two year-old on track for the Gold Coast all with a connection to New Zealand.

The 2024 NZB National Yearling Sale Series – Books 1 and 2 - (January 28 – February 2) features the best yearlings New Zealand has to offer and we’ve gone looking for something interesting in the mix!

Quality mare Campionessa has multiple Group wins and Group I placings on her resume and the daughter of Contributer (IRE) added another feather in her cap when winning the Group II Cal Isuzu Stakes last Saturday, read about her here.

While there are no family relations to Campionessa at Karaka there are 16 yearlings by her sire Contributer in K1 and one of them is bred on the same cross as she is being from a mare by champion sire O’Reilly. The nick has produced nine winners from 11 starters so nearly 82% winner to runner and while Campionessa is the first SW bred this way there are also four more stakes-placed horses and promising three year-old Snow Patrol in the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr stable.

Lot 2 Colt Contributer (IRE) x Damesel, by O’Reilly – Mapperley Stud

Booking his ticket to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic last week with a win in the $200,000 MM Wyong Classic was expensive Snitzel colt Highness, whose pedigree has New Zealand origins, read about him here.

His third dam Palace Scandal is Kiwi bred and her stakes-placed daughter Diana’s Secret shot to fame as the dam of Australian Horse of the Year Dissident and this family appears once at Karaka Book 1.

Lot 288 Filly Castelvecchio x Palace Whispers – Haunui Farm

Promising Savabeel three year-old Interlinked made it two wins as many starts for the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable when beating the favourite Socks Nation to win at Caulfield last Friday.

Interlinked is closely related to dual Group I winner Atishu and is from Daisy Chain, a daughter of triple Group I winner and Champion 3YO Filly Daffodil. It’s a prolific Kiwi family packed with Black Type success and there are six yearlings in K1.
