Stakes Breakthrough for 7yo Rose Quartz

Mark Smith - Saturday November 18

The 7-year-old Written Tycoon mare Rose Quartz ended a big day for Yulong stallions and an even better one for Michael Dee and Grahame Begg when she scored a belated stakes win in Saturday’s Group III Neds How Now Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Placed in six of her nine starts since winning at Flemington in February, Rose Quartz was shortening stride in the final furlong.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, has enjoyed a memorable carnival, but his royally-bred Deep Impact filly Ghaanati was finishing quickly but fell a neck short.

The favourite She Dances (Street Boss) was the same distance back in third.

Rose Quartz advances her record to to five wins, five seconds, and two thirds from 18 starts, with earnings of $525,090.

Another stakes-winner on the day off the hallowed grounds of Mill Park, Rose Quartz, was a $300,000 purchase for Grahame Begg Rcg/Rohan J Hughes Thoroughbred Services at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is a half-sister to Group II Tobin Bronze Stakes and dual Group III winner Seradess (Astern), who was a recent $700,000 digital purchase for Yulong.

They are two of the three winners from four to race for the stakes-placed Hidden Dragon mare Obsidian Dragon, a half-sister to Listed winner Danedina (Danehill Dancer).

Henry Dwyer Racing shelled out $100,000 for a Magna Grecia filly out of Obsidian Dragon consigned by Mill Park Stud to the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

After missing in 2021 Obsidian Dragon foaled a Pinatubo (IRE) colt on October 24.

Rose Quartz is the 56th stakes-winner for Yulong Stud’s Written Tycoon.
