The $3 Million Barman

Mark Smith - Saturday October 28

Chris Waller's old warhorse Who Shot Thebarman earned a fourth shot at the Melbourne Cup after finding the winner's circle for the first time in nearly two years in Saturday's $300,000 Group II McCafe Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley.

A third consecutive winner on the day for Blake Shinn, Who Shot Thebarman defeated stablemate Libran by a half-length with the pacesetting Cismontane holding on for third a further half-head back. (photo Grant Courtney)

The 2014 Group I Auckland Cup (3200m) winner snapped a 20-race losing streak Group II Zipping Classic at Sandown in November 2015.

The 9yo son of Yamanin Vital advances his record to 10 wins, 7 seconds and 3 thirds from 47startsfor earnings of $3,069,071.

It's my first win on him although the owners have stuck very loyal to me, Shinn said."

"I've finished second in the Sydney Cup and BMW on him from 10 or 11 rides.

"Chris Waller keeps rejuvenating these horses and keeping them in a happy place and it's fantastic to get him over the line for everyone involved."

Chris Waller confirmed Who Shot Thebarman would make his next start in the Melbourne Cup.

"We've had so much fun with him. He's just as important to the stable as a horse like Winx," Waller said

"He's nine-year-old, tries his heart out and loves his profession.

"You'll see him on the first Tuesday in November. He's been there three times. He ran third the first time, got knocked over and almost fell at his second and last year I think he finished fifth. He ran second in the Sydney Cup six months ago.

"It's not just about winning a Melbourne Cup it's being a part of the event, we are all entitled to dream."

Bred by White Robe Lodge's Brian and Lorraine Anderton, Who Shot Thebarman is a son of their overachieving Sir Tristram stallion Yamanin Vital who died in 2009.

Who Shot Thebarman is out of the unraced Carolingian mare Ears Carol whose second dam Auditive (Random Chance) is a daughter of the Listed winner Auditory (Noble Bijou) from the family of dual Group 1 winner Prized Gem the dam of Group 1 AJC Australian Derby winner and young sire Nom Du Jeu (Montjeu).
