Red Can Man is Back

Mark Smith - Saturday October 21

Some 119 weeks after his last win in the Group III Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield in July 2021, Red Can Man returned to the winner's circle in the Furphy RS Crawford Stakes (1000m) at Ascot.

Given a pearler by Shaun McGruddy, the Steve Wolfe-trained son of Gingerbread Man defeated the 4-year-old Deep Field mare My Bella Mae by a half-length, with the 6-year-old Red Hot Choice gelding Hot Zed a long-head back in third.

With his fourth stakes success, Red Can man advances his record to nine wins, eight seconds, and seven thirds from 42 starts with earnings of $1,382,090.

“He has been beaten by the best sprinters in the state, Elite Street and Amelia’s Jewel. He’s a great horse who has not had a lot of luck,” Wolfe said.  “He’s had a good spell. It was a peach of a ride by McGruddy, and he has won $1.3million.”

Purchased by Commercial Bloodstock Services P/L (FBAA) for $50,000 at the 2017 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Red Can Man is a half-brother to Group II ATC Sapphire Stakes and Group III Birthday Card Stakes winner Quilista.

He is one of six winners from nine to race out of stakes-placed Brocky's Ace (Surtee). Sold at the dispersal of Korilya Stud for $7,000 when in foal to Oratorio (AUS) at the 2014 Magic Millions Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sale, Brocky's Ace missed in 2021 and was covered by Splintex last spring.

Gingerbread Man (Shamardal) is covering his eleventh season at Yarranadal Stud for a fee of $5,500.
