A 40th Group 1 for Redoute's Choice as Rediener Captures the Epsom

Mark Smith - Saturday September 30

Enjoying the run of the race third on the fence, Kathy O’Hara maneuvered Rediener past the leader Golden Mile before holding the finish of  Kovalica in Saturday’s $1,500,000 TAB Epsom (1600m) at Randwick.

The 4-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice defeated stablemate Kovalica (Ocean Park) by a half-head, with Golden Mile (Astern) a head back in third.

It was the fourth win on the bounce for the underrated gelding, which staked his claim last start in the Group III Bill Ritchie Hcp after ending the winter in Brisbane with a win in the Group III Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm.

With his Group 1 triumph, Rediener advances his record to six wins, two seconds, and two thirds from 14 starts with earnings of $1,388,200.

“It’s very special for Kathy (O’Hara), Charlie’s (Duckworth) wife. It’s great, Kathy is just an amazing toiler,” Chris Waller said.

“Sydney racing 52 weeks a year; she just gives it her best, amazing horse person. Gives you great feedback, she lives on a horse. Charlie is obviously so close to me.

“When he won in Queensland, we set him for this race, but setting horses for races is not easy. But seeing him win like he did first-up gave us a little hope, and the barrier draw was obviously a plus.”

A three-quarter brother to Snitzel, Rediener is a homebred for Neil Werrett and partners. He is a brother to stakes-placed Redoutable Heart and a half to Listed winner Rathlin (Fastnet Rock) and stakes-placed Za Zi Ba (All Too Hard).

Rediener is the tenth winner from as many to race out of the stakes-placed Weiner (More Than Ready), a daughter of the outstanding matron Snippets’ Lass.

Besides Snitzel, Snippets’ Lass is the dam of Group III AJC Skyline Stakes winner and successful stallion Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) and Group III SAJC Janz Stakes winner Viennese (Redoute’s Choice).

Weiner has an unraced 3yo filly by the Autumn Sun named La Belle Vie, a $200,000 Inglis Easter Yearling. Also trained by Chris Waller, La Belle Vie impressed with a second in a barrier trial at Randwick in June.

Weiner died in April last year. Her final foal is a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock.

Rediener is one of 23 live foals from the final crop of the great Redoute’s Choice and becomes his 40th elite-level winner.
