Is He The Best Value in Victoria?

Joe Carbone - Thursday September 28

With key runners in two Group I races this weekend, this quiet achiever is on the up.

It would seem Blue Gum have struck a pot of gold with the addition of Flying Artie to the Victorian ranks this season.

It’s a discussion which of late has been dancing to the beat of its own tune on the track and in the winners circle with a plethora of winners including two at stakes level.

A deep dive into the Flying Artie bloodlines shows that his family are certainly no strangers to turf stardom.

He is the best son of underrated American stallion Artie Schiller (USA) who very well may have saved his best till last in undefeated three year old colt Steparty.

His dam Flying Ruby won the Listed Bow Mistress in 2009 and if you dig a little deeper her grandam Better Fantasy, was responsible for producing one of the greats of the turf in Better Loosen Up, an Australian Horse of the Year that won the Group I Cox Plate, Australian Cup and Japan Cup among his 17 victories.

Fast forward to this weekend, Flying Artie has two live chances in Group I events with sizzling sprinting mare Asfoora in the Moir Stakes (1000m) and progressive gelding Democracy Manifest in the Epsom, both looking to continue their stellar form.

Having covered his biggest ever book of 201 mares at a fee of $33,000 in 2021, one would think Flying Artie is  cherry ripe to deliver even more black type performers in years to come.

Flying Artie stands at a fee of $16,500.
