The trainers of the winner and runner-up of Saturday's 2CH Handicap (1600m) at Randwick will follow familiar Melbourne campaigns next month.

Savabeel colt Kaonic ($3.70 fav) confirmed a trip south for the Group III Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day after easily accounting for his opposition over the Randwick mile.

The Carbine Club Stakes is a race the Chris Waller stable has won twice in the past three years courtesy of Kermadec (2014) and Comin' Through (2016).

"That was the plan before the race. Obviously, it's a lot easier to make the call now that he's gone and done that," assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said.

"He's an impressive colt with a very bright future ahead."

John Sargent's Luvaluva ($7.50) also booked a ticket to Melbourne after running on strongly to finish two lengths behind the winner in second place.

Sargent said the daughter Mastercraftsman is bound for the Group I VRC Oaks (2500m) and will have her final lead-up in the Group II Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day.

It is a preparation Sargent has had recent success with Kirramosa (2013) and Thunder Lady (2014).

Kaonic's stablemate Sambro ($8) missed second by half a neck while second favourite Our Mantra ($4.80), trained by Joe Pride, endured a torrid run three wide before gradually weakening in the straight to finish six lengths from the winner in fifth.
