Sydney 2YO Trials in a Nutshell

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 18

12 heats for new season juveniles were run at Randwick this morning and with no runners from champion trainer Chris Waller and one from Godolphin it was not hard for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott to dominate producing seven of the winners including the fastest colt and filly.

$1.2million I Am Invincible filly Invincible Madison was the most expensive trial winner on Monday at Randwick.

Fastest colt went first and that was Straight Charge in the Yulong colours.

Heat 1 – Colts - Straight Charge – 48.46 seconds

Ridden with plenty of purpose by Regan Bayliss, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Written By colt Straight Charge was sent forward to lead and when challenged and headed by Roselyn’s Star he fought back to draw clear and win.

A $270,000 Magic Millions purchase for Yulong from the Lime Country Thoroughbreds draft, Straight Charge was a successful pinhook having made $160,000 for Twin Hills Stud at the Inglis Weanling Sale. He is bred to go fast being from Matryoshka, a half-sister by I Am Invincible to Group winners Winning Rupert and Tycoon Evie, who are both by Written By’s champion sire Written Tycoon.

Fastest filly was a bargain priced Lady Tassort.

Heat 6 – Fillies – Lady Tassort – 48.98

Lady Tassort showed brilliant natural speed to lead and then was very green in her action, but still too quick when let down to break 49 seconds for the first time this morning since Straight Charge won the opening heat.

A $40,000 Inglis Weanling Sale purchase from the Bell River Thoroughbreds draft, she fell short of her $60,000 reserve at Inglis Classic and runs for a syndicate headed by Redfox Racing. She is from the first crop of Newgate Farm’s Tassort, a fast juvenile for Godolphin by Brazen Beau that had just two race starts winning the Golden Gift on debut and finishing second in the Silver Slipper. Lady Tassort is the third foal of Ice Cream Lady, a winning Not a Single Doubt mare from the family of Group I winning filly Aragen.

Not far off was blue-blood Lady of Camelot in the Go Bloodstock colours of Sir Owen Glenn.

Heat 2 – Fillies – Lady of Camelot – 49.04 seconds

Gai Waterhouse and Adran Bott struck again in the second heat with Written Tycoon filly Lady of Camelot jumping fast to sit outside the leader and she powered away down the running to win as she pleased by a big margin.

A homebred for Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, Lady of Camelot is the third foal of stakes-winning Fastnet Rock mare Miss Debutante, whose first two foals are Group winning fillies Queen of the Ball and Platinum Jubilee. Based on this trial it’s quite possible Miss Debutante will get the hat-trick of stakes-winners with her first three foals! Miss Debutante produced her first colt last spring by Flying Arite and is  due to foal to I Am Invincible, the sire of Queen of the Ball.

First season sires made their mark with Blue Point (IRE) siring two heat winners in Scampi and Gerringong while Pierata sired Fearless to win his heat and Tassort got on the board with Lady Tassort winning her heat.

Most impressive of them was the Maher and Eustace trained Scampi.

Heat 9 – Colts – Scampi – 49.36 seconds

In recent years the Maher and Eustace stable have had a habit of producing an exceptional two year-old at the Sydney trials and they did it again this morning with Blue Point (IRE) colt Scampi scoring a visually very impressive trial win. He jumped fast, led and controlled the race, looking comfortable throughout and when allowed a little rein by Jason Collett moved clear to win easily.

A $750,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock, Scampi was the second highest priced yearling by his sire and is a half-brother to fast stakes-winning juvenile Semillon from Sistonic, whose third dam is blue hen Scandinavia so it’s the Black Caviar, All Too Hard and Ole Kirk family.

Three million dollar yearlings competed and all ran well, $1million Zoustar colt Espionage edged out $1.6million I Am Invincible colt Bodyguard with $1.2million I Am Invincible filly Invincible Madison winning the last heat in style.

Heat 12 – Fillies – Invincible Madison – 49.55 seconds

I Am Invincible filly Invincible Madison was a beauty in the sale ring when selling at Magic Millions this year for $1.2million and has lost none of her good looks and appeal since January. She travelled sweetly behind the leaders and when angled into the clear by Sam Clipperton, the Peter and Paul Snowden trained filly lengthened stride to win easily.

Bought by US investor Tammy Rigney from the Glenlogan Park draft, Invincible Madison is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Champion Singapore 2YO Super One and is the first foal of Group II placed sprinter Super Too.

From last to first, Snitzel colt Volatile was the only winner for the China Horse Club/ Newgate partnership, who won the Breeders Plate last year with Empire of Japan.

Heat 11 – Colts – Volatile – 49.32 seconds

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and sporting the China Horse Club colours, Snitzel colt Volatile settled last in his heat, but charged to the line full of running to win his heat by a couple of lengths under a hold.

A $550,000 Magic Millions purchase for China Horse Club/Newgate/Go/Trilogy from the Newgate Farm draft, Volatile is from winning Lonhro mare Artemis Rose, a half-sister to stakes-winner Regrowth and to the dam of Golden Slipper winner Forensics. He traces in tail female line to blue hen Easy Date, so is fro the family of outstanding sires Snippets and Not a Single Doubt as well promising young sire King’s Legacy.
