Punters stuck in post-Everest fog as they try to unravel Caulfield Cup

Ben Dorries - Friday October 20

Punters are slowly warming to the chances of David Hayes claiming his third Caulfield Cup although a post Everest fog seems to have settled.

A post-Everest fog has struck punters trying to work out the Caulfield Cup, although they are sniping around the edges with contenders like Harlem and Ventura Storm

While punters were happy to plonk down their hard-earned to try to climb The Everest won by Redzel last Saturday, they have approached Saturday's Caulfield Cup with less confidence.

Punters are chipping away at the edges with Sportsbet reporting two of the Lindsay Park runners, Harlem ($12 into $9.50) and Ventura Storm ($15 into $12), were being supported on Friday although not to the tune of any massive wagers.

Sportsbet has also taken a $5000 bet on Darren Weir runner Amelie's Star, although the mare has drifted from $8.50 to $10.

Ladbrokes have taken several decent four-figure bets on Weir's leading contender Humidor (now $8.50) although these were taken earlier in the week and the money had dried up on Friday.

Ladbrokes report the overall Caulfield Cup market move has been for Irish raider and favourite Johannes Vermeer ($4.20) but outside of that there had been "bits and pieces" of money for others runners that punters had been chipping away at.

Matthew Campbell from CrownBet says most individual bets have been taken on Bonneval, cleared to run by vets on Thursday, however the bigger bets and more money has gone on Johannes Vermeer.

"Outsiders that have been specked in betting are Marmelo at $17, Abbey Marie at $23 and even He's Our Rokki ($126)," Campbell said.
