Making his debut in the 1400m maiden at Bendigo, he needed every inch of the trip to catch the hot favourite Gallant Prince (Trapeze Artist) to win by a neck with Blake Shinn in the saddle.

Kosgei was bred by the late Sir Patrick Hogan and is a half-brother to Group I ATC Australian Derby winner Tavago and Group III placed Sweet Anna being the seventh winner from nine foals to race from Sara Ann, an unraced sister to Group II winner La Sizeranne from the family of Group I winenrs Gorzvenor and National Gallery and further back Mahaya and Lonhro.

The Busuttin and Young stable invariably produce some quality staying spring three year-olds that go all the way to the Victoria Derby and Kosgei has the pedigree for the task.
