Third Stakes-Winner for Too Darn Hot

Tara Madgwick - Thursday August 31

With his first Australian two year-olds to race this season, Darley shuttler Too Darn Hot (GB) added a third stakes-winner to his tally overnight when Carolina Reaper landed the Group III Baden-Baden Zukunfts Rennen (1400m) in Germany.

Trained in the UK by Charlie Johnston, she was a last start fifth behind another Too Darn Hot filly Fallen Angel in the Group III Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket and went to the post as favourite for this assignment.

Carolina Reaper produced a brilliant late surge for Jack Mitchell  to snatch a neck win on the line taking her overall record to two wins from five starts.

“It was a tough race for her,” said Jack Mitchell.

“In England, she's very sharp and she can make the running, but today she just didn't want to. I had to ride her differently, wherever she was happy, and she just did enough for me.”

She was bought for 46,000 guineas by Johnston Racing from the Watership Down Stud draft at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

Carolina Reaper is the best of four winners from stakes-winning Shamardal mare Dark Promise, a half-sister to Group I Epsom Oaks winner Love Divine, the dam of Group I St Leger winner Sixties Icon.

Dubawi’s champion son Too Darn Hot is building a nice record with his first crop of two year-olds producing 11 winners from 41 runners and his three stakes-winners are all Group winners with Carolina Reaper joining Fallen Angel and Darnation.

He is back at Darley NSW  this spring at a fee of $44,000.
