One to Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday August 30

They aren’t making Tavistock’s anymore and his last crop of foals are now three year-olds with a Kiwi bred colt trained by Joe Pride set to step up to stakes company after casting off maiden status at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Impressive at the barrier trials and then a good third on debut at Canterbury earlier this month, Ceolwulf appreciated the step up to 1400m letting down impressively for Sam Clipperton to score a half length win over $950,000 I Am Invincible colt Mojave Desert, who topped the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

“He’s a really nice colt, but has a long way to go in terms of his development and what he’s got to learn, but he’s kicked off his career very well,” said Joe Pride, who holds Ceolfwulf in the highest regard.

“It’s not very often that you see horses by his sire Tavistock show up wither at this age or over a shorter trip, so he’s really exciting and I like him a lot.

“I thought if he won today we might go to the Ming Dynasty (G3 1400m September 9) , but he’d have to pull up well to do that as it’s only 10 days away.”

A $170,000 NZB Ready to Run purchase for his trainer from the Riversley Park draft, Ceolwulf is from unraced Shamardal mare Las Brisas, a half-sister to stakes-winner Nantyglow from the family of Group I winning stayers Cerulean Sky and Moonstone, not to mention Aussie bred Champion Hong Kong Sprinter Wellington.

He was bred by Cambridge Stud and breezed in 10.77 seconds and you can watch his gallop below.
