One To Watch - Pakenham

Mark Smith - Thursday August 24

Third on debut in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes behind Little Brose and Cylinder, Gangitano has run into several promising sorts in three subsequent races. The son of Written By was odds-on to break his maiden over 1400m on the Pakenham synthetic on Thursday and disdainfully disposed of his overmatched rivals.

Ridden by Michael Dee for Amy and Ash Yargi, Gangitano bowled along in fourth place behind the speed set by Suprendre and the confidently backed Disselation.

Eased out three wide to mount his challenge. Levelling up shortly after, Gangitano bounded away in the final stages to defeat the 4yo Fastnet Rock gelding Mizen by a widening three and a half lengths, with the 3yo Lonhro filly Relentless Ruby a length back in third.

“He made my job very easy,” Dee said.

“He’s five times better than this lot. He’s a city-quality horse, and hopefully, he can gain plenty of confidence from this.

“He feels like a miler, no further at this stage. He would have no problem with 1600m as long as the tempo was genuine and he could relax.

“He has a good turn of foot and needs to keep momentum, then he has the ability to win much better races.”

Bred by Aquis Farm and G 1 G Racing & Breeding, Gangitano was a $70,000 pinhook for Binalong Bloodstock from the Willow Park Stud draft at the 2021 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale.

Reoffered by Newgate Farm at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the son of Written By was knocked down to Dream Thoroughbreds / Bluegrass Bloodstock (FBAA) / Yargi Racing / Pink Race Series Ladies Horse Syndicate for $80,000.

He is the second winner from as many to race for the talented Foxwedge mare Colosomo, a $20,00 purchase for Avesta Bloodstock at the 2021 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale.

After foaling a King’s Legacy colt last spring, Colosomo was covered by Wild Ruler.

Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes hero Written By stands at Widden Stud in 2023 for $27,500.
