One to Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday August 23

Trial watchers have been awake to the ability of talented Almanzor (Fr) colt Carrazana (NZ) for some time and he delivered on that potential with a last to first win at Randwick on Wednesday.

Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by Nash Rawiller, Carrazana was having his second start in the 1300m maiden following a debut fourth at Warwick Farm on August 9 behind Les Vampires, who has accepted for the Group III ATC Up and Coming Stakes on Saturday.

Drawn the outside, Carrazana was allowed to drop back to last by Rawiller so he could relax and find his rhythm and surged into the race with a sustained finishing burst that carried him straight past the leaders to win by more than a length running away.

“The instructions were pretty simple, shut him down in the first half of the race and let his ability do the rest in the second half,” said Rawiller.

Carrazana got the job done in the manner of a horse going win many more races.

“We told Nash to ride him like a horse for the future and he showed that great turn of foot,” said assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth.

“He’s by Almanzor so we’d expect him to get over ground. Guy Mulcaster continues to select these excellent horses for us to train.”

Like the Chris Waller trained Victoria Derby winner Manzoice, Carrazana is by the same sire Almanzor and was also purchased from the Magic Millions Sale at the Gold Coast.

Carrazana was the most expensive yearling by Almanzor sold in Australia in 2022.

Carrazana was bought for $440,000 at Magic Millions by Waller Racing/ Guy Mulcaster Bloodstock from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft making him the most expensive Almanzor sold in Australia in 2022.

He’s already been gelded and pedigree says ‘classic’ horse as he is a half-brother to Group III placed Manchu being the second winner from Empress Cixi (GB), an unraced half-sister by Shamardal to French Group II winner Ocovango tracing back to third dam Crystal Music, winner of the Group I Ascot Fillies Mile.

A half-sister by Kermadec to Carrazana was bought by Dvid Ellis at Karaka Book 1 this year for $180,000.
