Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Monday July 24

There were eight heats for juveniles run at Warwick Farm with some interesting winners including the unraced half-sister to Magic Time and an unraced Justify (USA) colt bred for classic races, while proven stakes class filly Kimochi looks ready to pick up where she left off.

Brave Smash (Jpn) filly Kimochi has shown plenty of talent to date for Gary Portelli with a win and a second and last start third in the Group II ATC Percy Sykes Stakes. She looked super professional, jumping quickly to the lead for James McDonald and travelling on the bit all the way to score a half length win.

Kimochi is from unraced I Am Invincible mare Summer Fun, but her grand-dam Summerbliss was third in the Group I VRC Oaks and has a stout European family further back, so she might prove effective past 1200m if connections are looking towards the Princess Series.

Trained by Annabel Neasham, Justify (USA) colt Cicada caught our eye at his first try in a 1000m trial a few weeks back finishing fourth and managed to win this one over 1200m hitting the line quite well, albeit still looking green to the task.

A $250,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft for Annabel Neasham/Brian McGuire, Cicada is the first foal of Night Call (NZ), a winning half-sister by O’Reilly to four-time Group I winning stayer Preferment and Group III winning stayer Rezoned, who were both by Zabeel. There’s a good mix of speed and class in this pedigree to give us some optimism about Cicada.

Cicada was a $250,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Joe Pride has had a lot of success with Proven Thoroughbreds and unraced Zoustar filly Cosmonova carried their colours in this heat to a stylish win. She was last of eight in her first trial on July 7, but was not beaten far and was never asked for an effort that day, but this time when the question was asked she surged home nicely out wide to win by a head after travelling deep.

Cosmonova was a $220,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Milburn Creek draft for Proven Thoroughbreds / Pride Racing and was well bought with her half-sister Magic Time coming out after that to win three of her four starts so far including the Group III ATC PJ Bell Stakes. Cosmonova is the second foal from Group III winning Nicconi mare Time Awaits, whose Dundeel yearling colt sold for $300,000 at Magic Millions this year.

Cosmonova was a $220,000 Inglis Premier purchase.

Additional winners were: The Black Cloud (Shamus Award), Nadal (Xtravagant), Missile Seeker (Smart Missile), Legolas (Capitalist) and What a Machine (Lean Mean Machine).
