Australian Stud Book Red Flags – New to Century Club

Tara Madgwick - Sunday July 23

The response to our ‘red flags’ stories regarding factual data from the Australian Studbook has led to another story and this one highlights a stallion that clocked up his first century of seasonal winners over the weekend and it won’t be his last.

Rubick stands at Swettenham Stud.

A brilliantly fast Group II winning son of Encosta de Lago from the family of Redoute’s Choice, Rubick started his stud career at Coolmore, but is now in Victoria at Swettenham Stud.

Rubick hit 100 winners for the season on Saturday and has been riding high in part to a very strong crop of three year-olds that includes four stakes-winners headed by his dual Group I winning colt Jacquinot, who retires to Widden Stud this spring.

Rubick had good support in his first three seasons, but that went into overdrive when his first crop colt Yes Yes Yes came out and won the Group II ATC Todman Stakes at two and then The Everest as a spring three year-old. He too is now at stud, following his sire and grand-sire to Coolmore and will have his first runners next season.

As good as his three year-olds have been this season, we can probably expect to see more of the same next season as his current two year-olds are from the best quality book of mares he’s ever covered. Rubick has had 44 two year-old runners this season for nine winners including a couple of very promising maiden metro winners last Wednesday in Undivided and French Endeavour, plus a stakes-placed filly in New Zealand called Rubicon Crossing.

Demand for Rubick has waxed and waned as you can see in the Australian Studbook stats below and while he is never going to replicate the success of his sire Encosta de Lago, Rubick  is settling into a niche as a reliable source of winners and in Yes Yes Yes and Jacquinot has shown himself capable of getting a far superior racehorse to himself.

Rubick stands at Swettenham Stud at a fee of $27,500.
