Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 14

There were six heats for juveniles at the Randwick trials on Friday morning and some interesting unraced winners by Pierro, I Am Invincible, Written By and Snitzel, plus the reappearance of one of the best 2YO fillies this season in Platinum Jubilee.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Platinum Jubilee won the Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes on debut last spring and placed in every start after that barring the Golden Slipper after which she went for a well earned spell.

The Zoustar filly has lost none of her speed or professionalism and did everything right here bar win, being run down late by a very talented, but as yet unraced Snitzel colt Moravia. Trained by Michael Freedman, Moravia has shown a good deal in his previous trials as well so we’re keen to see him on race day.

Problem child Mach Ten was also in this trial and has been gelded since the last time we saw him. A $1.2million Exceed and Excel colt, Mach Ten was a star at the official 2YO trials last year and finished second in the Breeder Plate, but failed to flatter in two subsequent starts. Tyler Schiller did a good job to hold him in this trial and he was obviously having an education in trying to relax with ear muffs on for first time.

An $800,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Edinburgh Park draft, Moravia is the first foal of stakes-winner Our Crown Mistress.

A full brother to dual Group winner and Golden Slipper place-getter Tulip, Pierro colt Les Vampires won his first ever trial last month and looked good again this time. Prepared by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, he led all the way and was asked to do a bit more in the straight to dash clear and win the 1050m heat by nearly four lengths.

A $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Coolmore draft, Les Vampires is also a half-brother to Group III winner Sacred Eye from good producing Group III winner Musidora.

John O’Shea is going quietly with I Am Invincible colt Dimitrov, who was third to Les Vampires in his previous trial last month and improved to win this heat ridden quietly by Tyler Schiller and watch for the run of Justify (USA) colt Cicada into fourth at his first appearance. This Annabel Neasham trained colt is bred to be a 3YO and might want a bit of ground, so he was a horse I want to see again.

A $300,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Yarraman Park draft for his trainer, Dimitrov is from Group III placed Lady Sharapova, whose grand-dam Perfectr Persuasion is a stakes-placed sister to Champion Filly Alinghi.

It was the first trial in a new preparation for Written By filly Write This Way and she was sharp to the task, jumping quickly to cross and race on the pace before surging to the win her heat over a big group of late closers including the promising metro winner Amazonian Lass, who looked strong and was trucking to the line under a hold for fourth.

A $320,000 Magic Millions purchase for Mick Wallace As Agent For Freedman Brothers from the Widden Stud draft, Write This Way is a half-sister to three winners from Totally Sure, a winning half-sister to Group III winner Tuscan Sling.

Additional winners were: Solar System (Deep Field) and Cassiel (Harry Angel (GB).
