JRHA Select Sale Off to a Record Setting Start

Mark Smith - Monday July 10

Despite nothing coming close to matching last year’s ¥450 million Maurice x Mosheen sale topper, the yearling session of the JRHA Select Sale closed with increases across the board to set new marks for gross, average and median.

The top price of ¥310 million (A$3,326,000) was shared by Lot 4, a colt by hot young sire Kitasan Black (JPN) and Lot 20, a colt by Silver State (JPN), both consigned by Northern Farm.

Purchased by the perennial leading buyer, Masahiro Noda of Danox Co Ltd, the Kitasan Black (JPN) colt is out of the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes winner Include Betty (USA) (Include).

The Silver State (JPN) colt is a half-brother to two-time Grade 1 winner Palace Malice (USA) and the recent Group 1 Tenno Sho (Spring) winner Justin Place (JPN), as well as the multiple Group placed Iron Barows (JPN) and stakes-placed Cast In Silver (USA).

The 12th foal of the grand producer Palace Rumor (USA), the Silver State (JPN), was purchased by TN Racing.

Palace Rumor(USA), was bought by Katsumi Yoshida at Fasig-Tipton November Sale in 2013 for US$1,100,000.

A Shunsuke Yoshida consigned colt by Kingman (GB) out of Cosmopolitan Queen, a sister to Grop 1 winner Arabian Queen, also went the way of TN Racing for ¥300 million ($3,153,000)

The top-priced filly was the Duramente (JPN) half-sister to Japan’s 2-time Horse Of The Year Gentildonna (Deep Impact).

Consigned by Northern Farm, the filly was a ¥210 million (A$2,208,000) purchase for TN Racing.

She is the 13th foal of the blue hen Donna Blini (Bertolini), winner of the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes.

In addition to Gentildonna, Donna Blini has left the Group III winner and Group 1 Victoria Mile runner-up Donau Blue and the stakes-placed winners Donna Attraente and Suleyman.

Kitasan Black(JPN) was popular at the yearling session, and a colt by Kitasan Black(JPN) out of I’m Already Sexy(USA), winner of three Graded Stakes on turf in the U.S.A, was bought by Hirosaki Toshihiro HD Co.Ltd for ¥290 million (A3,048;000).

“I would really like to buy a yearling by Kitasan Black”, Mr.Hirosaki said of his latest purchase.

“It was expensive; however, I was determined I must keep bidding until I become a successful bidder. I hope he will be a strong and durable racehorse, like Kitasan Black.” The consignment from Shadai Farm is the sixth foal out of I’m Already Sexy(USA), who was bought at Fasig-Tipton November Sale by Shadai Farm for $420,000.
216 lots, from 222 lots offered, were sold for 13,365,000,000 yen in total, which is a 3.8% increase from 2022.

The average price, 61,875,000 yen, is a 6.7% increase from 2022, and the median price, 45,000,000 yen, is a 7.1% increase from 2022.

The gross, average, and median, are new records at the yearling session. And clearance rate, 97.3%, is also a new record at the yearling session.
“I am impressed the market was very strong all way through today”, Katsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm commented at the conclusion of the yearling session.

“Clearance rate, 97.3%, tells the whole story. I am very glad to see the buyers were active, not only at the top end of market but also at the middle and bottom market.”
“Final crop of Duramente(JPN) was very popular, and Kitasan Black was popular as well”.
“And I am very happy to see so many new players in the game, who were very active”
